Thirteen charged over A-League pitch invasion

Police believe a group of Melbourne Victory crowd marshalls may be the key to identifying rowdy thugs who marred the A-League derby.

Police hunt more Melbourne derby AAMI Park pitch invaders

Police are still looking for Melbourne Victory marshalls who were working at AAMI Park when A-League soccer chaos exploded on the weekend.

Detectives from Operation Astute have been unable to contact all of the marshalls as part of their inquiry into the events which left Melbourne City goalkeeper Thomas Glover bloodied and the match abandoned.

The marshalls are volunteers appointed by the club as match-day organisers and provide monitoring and guidance of fans.

It is believed they may be able to help investigators identify figures involved in the mayhem.

Those supporters came from a cluster of Victory fans behind the goals at the northern end.

It comes as 13 alleged soccer hooligans have been charged over the A-League soccer anarchy that erupted at the Melbourne derby on Saturday night.

More images have also been released of the pitch invaders who police still want to identify.

Fresh video also shows louts throwing trolleys and buckets at the height of the mayhem.

So far, police from Operation Astute have allegedly identified 20 of about 150 pitch invaders and have vowed to hunt down the rest who stormed the AAMI Park playing arena.

Four of those men who have been identified are facing charges over alleged assaults on the field.

On Monday, police charged a 23-year-old man from Craigieburn, who they allege is “Bucket Man”, and part of the pack that surged onto the pitch.

The alleged “Bucket Man” was charged with multiple offences, including the assault of Melbourne City goalkeeper Tom Glover, who was struck with a bucket filled with sand which left him with a gash on his face.

Referee Alex King was also hit by the flying bucket.

Two teenagers, aged 18 and 19, have also been charged with assaulting Glover.

Police say they will be interviewed as soon as possible, with more charges expected to be laid in the coming days.

CCTV is being scrutinised by the police operation, which has also found:

*ABOUT 80 flares and fireworks were released on the night.

*OF those, 53 came from the Victory-dominant northern end and 19 at the southern end.

*FOUR men were injured during pitch invasion – the goalkeeper, cameraman and two security guards.

* $150,000 worth of damage was caused to the stadium,

Charges have been laid against a further ten people

The Herald Sun can also reveal a 17-year-old boy will be charged on summons with throwing a flare at a cameraman prior to the pitch invasion.

The charges include reckless conduct endangering serious injury and lighting a flare.

A further nine pitch invaders, all aged between 18 and 29, have been charged with offences including violent disorder, entry to competition space, disrupting a match, criminal damage, lighting flares, public nuisance and riotous behaviour.

The men were from Northcote, Wollert, Albion, St Albans, Cairnlea, Diggers Rest, Ringwood East, Sunbury and Pascoe Vale.

All of those who have been charged were bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on February 27, while the remaining will be charged on summons.

Detectives are continuing to appeal for the public’s help in relation to criminal damage, lighting of flares and throwing missiles including chairs, buckets and bottles during the pitch invasion.

Images have been released of people who may be able to help police with their inquiries.
