The Spirit of Tasmania has been forced to return to its dock in Geelong after a person fell overboard in Port Phillip Bay.

The ship was on its journey to Tasmania when the incident occurred on Sunday evening.

The vessel turned around and multiple search crews, including air wing and water units, were sent to scour the water between Portarlington and St Leonards beaches off the Bellarine Peninsula just after 8pm.

A body of a man was recovered around 8:50pm with police preparing a report for the coroner.

The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious.
