It’s all teeing off down in Portsea.
Seems his reign as Victorian premier hangs like an albatross for Dan the golfer, as Andrews has apparently got the message in very clear terms that he has no chance of joining one of Victoria’s most elite clubs.
A little birdie has told the Herald Sun that Andrews’ high-flying business mate, Max Beck, quietly approached Portsea Golf Club powerbrokers to lay down a marker for Dan and test the waters as to whether he might be able to join.
But it looks like the former premier is stuck in the rough, with the proposal a most definite shank.
Eagle-eyed sources say the vast majority of members who caught wind of the pitch said it should be given the hook.
Club protocol would see the names of prospective members placed on a notice board for two or three weeks, with members given the chance to express their approval or disapproval.
Early feedback suggests it won’t even get that far with the membership application unlikely to be formalised.
The Andrews camp is understood to be feeling very subpar about the whole episode, but there is still a lot of anger down on the Mornington Peninsula about the area being caught up in extended metropolitan lockdowns during the pandemic during a time when golf was all but banned.
That’s aside from all the noise surrounding the infamous Blairgowrie car crash with a teenage cyclist, which is still dragging through the courts, and the fact many of the Portsea members have a tendency to swing to the right.
It’s not known whether the troublesome steps at his Sorrento rental were interviewed for the proposal.
Sources say it is also unlikely there would be a new round of talks on the issue any time soon, as Andrews’ controversial tenure as premier is just too fresh in their memories.
If he’s to have any chance of joining, he’ll need to play a very long game, they say.
