Putting the squeeze on Victoria’s movers, shakers and headline makers
Women who have gone through a life change have long liked to mark the occasion with a new cut or colour but now male politicians are getting into it.
The very ex-Liberal leader John Pesutto was present this week at an event to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The solemn occasion was his first appearance in public since his colleagues ejected him from the big chair just before Christmas.
The man known as JP has hardly gone the whole Ned Kelly – not yet anyway – his designer stubble was all neat and tidy.
But he has clearly let his styling regimen relax over the summer. Pesutto was also seen mingling with members at the Hawthorn Bowling Club with, gosh, his shirt untucked.
Pesutto is not the only ex-leader to mark his change of status by putting away the razor.
Though he has since returned to the straight and narrow Pesutto’s predecessor Matthew Guy spent about 18 months unshaven after his last defeat at the hands of Daniel Andrews, who from the speed with which his beard was spotted in public, must have stopped shaving the moment he handed over Jacinta Allan.
They of course were following in the steps of the Ruddster who gave up shaving altogether after leaving politics, though to be fair to him he had in succession been sacked by both his colleagues and the public.
And another Labor leader Steve Bracks is another known to throw out the Gillette on occasion.
