Putting the squeeze on Victoria’s movers, shakers and headline makers.

Journalist and commentator Peta Credlin has joined the ranks of one of Melbourne’s most exclusive clubs – but not without ruffling some feathers.

Credlin was formally accepted as a member of the ultra-elite, ladies-only Alexandra Club last week, despite strong opposition from a small group of members who deemed Credlin an inappropriate addition to the prestigious association because of her strong stance against former Premier Daniel Andrews.

The Herald Sun understands Credlin was encouraged by some members to join the club after giving a rousing speech at the Collins St venue several years ago.

The 1000-plus members of the female social club, originally made up of wives of prominent businessmen and social figures, are notoriously tight-lipped about who gathers within the club room.

According to the website, members gather for “social and non-political purposes”.

But when news of Credlin’s application started to make its way through the hallowed halls, things became less than diplomatic, with at least two women seeking to block her membership.

When contacted on Wednesday, one of the alleged blockers – a high-profile female media personality – denied the allegation, simply stating: “not true”.

Despite the opposition, Credlin’s membership was on Tuesday last week formally approved.

Her entry to the Alexandra Club was confirmed the same day Andrews announced his exit from another exclusive club, the Victorian Labor Party.

When contacted on Wednesday, Credlin said “I am sorry but I am unable to make any comment whatsoever. I refer you to the Alexandra Club please.”
