IKEA is branching into solar panel sales in Australia.
The Swedish retailer famous for its flatpack furniture and meatballs will offer renewable energy systems through its website from today.
The panel and installation packages cost $3500-$7000 upfront, depending on size, residential location and government incentives and rebates.
IKEA has partnered with solar business Solargain which will sell, design and install the Solstrale home systems offered on the website.
Customers in Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland living within 100km of
IKEA stores will be the first able to purchase, with other states to follow soon.
IKEA Australia CEO Jan Gardberg said: “We are proud to have developed this offer in collaboration with our partner, and we hope that this will encourage our customers to live a more sustainable everyday life by removing the barriers to investing in renewable energy”.
The Australian home solar launch is the first outside Europe for IKEA.
“The conditions in Australia are amazing and among the best in the world to offer an affordable solar solution,” Mr Gardberg said.
IKEA said families that installed a 6.6kW solar panel system could cut up to $1340-$1950 from annual electricity costs, depending where they lived.
It typically took an average four years for the panels to be paid off through bill savings.
Battery storage systems will also be offered.
