SAM Newman has regularly found himself in hot water by staging offensive skits or running his mouth on The Footy Show.
Here are the Fossil’s worst clangers and most controverisal skits in more than two decades on air.
BLACKFACE FURORE
When Nicky Winmar refused to appear on the show in 1999 — six years after his iconic photograph was taken — Newman decided to “step in” and appear on set in blackface, with his face covered in shoe polish.
BARING (B)ALL
No stranger to nudity, Newman was first dacked on air by Shane Crawford in 2001, revealing his genitalia in the revealing episode. His nether region and buttocks were revealed on air again during a skit featuring a bottomless Newman, who flashed audiences when he was being “helped” off a bed by a scantily-clad nurse in a 2014 skit.
PIE IN THE OX’S FACE
An angry David Schwarz didn’t appreciate Newman slamming a pie into his face on air to “celebrate his 150th game” with Melbourne in 2001, knocking him head over toes in anger after as audience members laughed. Undeterred, Newman got up and continued playing the fool.
FAKE BINGE
Newman led his colleagues and audiences to believe he drank a whole glass of Jim Beam in seven seconds in 2005. After downing the drink, he followed up the stunt with another glass and pretended to be drunk on air. The liquid was later revealed to be cold tea.
TASTELESS COUSINS SKIT
When Brownlow medallist Ben Cousins’ struggle with drugs was publicly revealed in 2007, Newman panned the former Eagles star on the panel by pretending to imbibe in a bong and joint on air.
CARO CUTOUT
In a 2008 move that was widely panned as sexist, Newman lampooned football writer and TV presenter Caroline Wilson by stapling a cutout of her face on a lingerie-clad mannequin, before dressing it up and groping it.
MONKEYING ABOUT
In a 2009 skit, Newman likened a Malaysian man to a monkey who was “not long out of the forest”. After a finding by the media watchdog, it was an incident that was supposed to cost Nine $200,000 if he caused further offence.
BONG STUNT
Viewers were shocked when Newman pulled out a bong and appeared to smoke marijuana at the desk. Again, the adult substance was deemed to be tea, in the move that was slammed by the Family Council of Victoria.
BOTOX ON AIR
Baring his bottom again in a hospital gown, Newman shocked audiences when he was injected with Botox live on air in 2012. Two vials were injected into his temples, in a move that was slammed as “shallow” and “materialistic” by psychologists.
SHOCKING NEW LOOK
This one’s less of a clanger but surprised audiences nevertheless when Newman performed a skit as US president Donald Trump, then peeled the wig off to reveal a freshly-shaved head. Co-host Rebecca Maddern was aghast at his new look, saying he had a full head of hair before the show.
