Multiple children were rescued after their sailing boats capsized in strong winds in Port Melbourne on Sunday.

More than 60 people – mostly children – were taking part in a regatta from Williamstown when powerful winds hit just after 11.15am.

Some of the 40 boats overturned in the shipping channel between Williamstown and Port Melbourne, leaving the sailors stranded in the rough waters.

A massive rescue operation was launched to save the children.

The Victoria Police air wing and Life Saving Victoria rescue chopper worked with water police and lifeguards on jetskis to bring the children back to land.

They were all wearing life jackets and no injuries were reported.

The shipping channel was closed during the rescue operation.
