SURGERIES have been cancelled at the The Alfred hospital as engineers repair the hospital’s damaged hot water and heating system.

The steam system, which supplies hot water and heating to parts of the hospital, malfunctioned on Wednesday afternoon and is expected to take 24 hours to fix.

The Herald Sun understands hospital staff were forced to move emergency operating theatres due to the damage, and some elective surgeries were immediately cancelled.

It’s believed patients whose surgeries were cancelled have been contacted.

Alfred Health chief executive Prof Andrew Way said some non-urgent surgeries were rescheduled “to ensure we have capacity to continue treating emergency and trauma patients”.

“While most hospital operations have been able to continue, the outage has impacted some of

our operating theatres,” Prof Way said.

“We appreciate the cooperation of patients and staff while we fix this older part of our

infrastructure.”
