A TERRORIST costume for sale at a Broadmeadows discount store has outraged shoppers.
“Terrorist Man” comes complete with a keffiyeh style hat, camouflage print coat and white shirt and trousers.
The packaging shows a man sporting a long beard and holding an imitation AK47, however these items are not included in the pack.
The costume was being displayed prominently for sale at Giant 2 Discounts in Broadmeadows shopping centre until being removed late today.
The owners of the store were unavailable for comment.
The sale of the costume has upset some shoppers in the local area.
Iraqi migrant and newly naturalised Australian Amer Youkhanna was outraged that the Terrorist Man was selling at his local shopping centre.
“I was walking around with two mates looking for phone chargers and suddenly I saw Terrorist Man with the beard and the outfit,” he said.
“It was really highly offensive. I did not feel well. I left Iraq because extremists were running the country.
“I flee from there to find country where human rights are respected.”
The teacher’s aide was so alarmed by the costume that he called the terrorism hotline to demand its removal from sale.
“The National Security Hotline said they can’t do anything, they said it’s not under our jurisdiction, we’re here only for serious threats,” Mr Youkhanna said.
“This is not a dress-up costume for a Hollywood character. This is a terrorist kit for people who chop heads and enslave women.”
Mr Youkhanna, who is a member of the Chaldean Catholic Church, said that he is passionate about his new homeland and does not want to see its culture threatened.
“I love living here, it’s lovely, it’s a great country, I feel offended if the culture here is intimidated by people wearing that costume,” he said.
Consumer Affairs Minister Jane Garrett has asked her office to investigate.
