A teenager has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after a shooting in Coolaroo in the city’s north on Friday night.

Police were called to Zakwell Court about 10.30pm after a boy in his late teens was found with a suspected gunshot wound to his torso.

Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance paramedics treated the man for a lower-body injury and took him to hospital in a stable condition.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident have yet to be established, and a police investigation is underway.

A business owner has told the Herald Sun he heard a car speed off after three gun shots just metres away from locals in what he believes to be a targeted attack.

“We heard three loud bangs outside and thought it was a car backfiring in the street,” he said.

“We are sick of it, we are trying to run a business and it makes me not even want to open today.”

He said that fights are quite a common occurrence in the area but have lately gotten more violent.

“These days a fight turns into a shoot out - it is ugly.”

Lauao Imo is from the Samoan Presbyterian Church and is grateful the youth group left only an hour before the incident occurred.

“It’s very scary knowing that me and some of the youth where here till about 9:30 and that happened,” Ms Imo said.

“I fear for our people it doesn’t matter what time just that incident was. It brings a lot of fear to us because we’d like to feel safe especially our church community.”

She said that the area is frequently busy with lots of commotion and people speeding and burning their tires on the road.

“I remember one funeral we had to wait till they stopped their burns and then we could leave.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
