A teacher at a troubled youth jail has been bashed, allegedly after refusing to let his attackers listen to music.
The worker was set upon by two teenagers at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre in central Victoria this afternoon.
The Herald Sun has been told the male teacher was taking a literacy class in the centre’s Deakin unit when he told the boys they could not listen to music from a laptop.
They then launched into him, smashing his glasses, before other staff intervened.
Ambulance officers treated the staff member at the scene and he was not taken to hospital.
Malmsbury has been plagued by violent incidents and disorder in recent years.
There have been numerous escape attempts, including one last month in which a staff member was attacked and his swipe access card stolen.
The Herald Sun has been told staff reported concerns to management about growing tensions in the secure unit in a lockdown meeting this morning.
“We’re just at our wits end,” one staff member said.
“The staff are reporting intel that things aren’t right but it’s being ignored.
“We go to work every day wondering who is going to be hurt next.
“It’s a badge of honour for these boys. It’s like a notch on the belt if they bash a staff member.”
