A section of Swanston St has been renamed after a blunder by City of Melbourne.
Incredibly, Swanstog St is now the new name for addresses between numbers 178 and 196 after a printing error caused the wrong sign to be produced.
MINIBUS DRIVER CHARGED AFTER RECKLESS CONDUCT
A City of Melbourne spokeswoman confirmed that the existing Swanston St sign for that part of the road had to be replaced after it was damaged by a street sweeper on Saturday.
“We immediately contacted our printing department and they worked quickly to create a replacement sign,” she said.
“The new sign contains a small spelling mistake. Due to the cost associated with sign printing, the City of Melbourne will instead change the street name for the foreseeable future.
“It is only one letter and we hope our residents, workers, and city visitors will understand the need to reduce costs and keep the sign.”
The spokeswoman said the council was working closely with businesses to help them update addresses and minimise any disruption caused by the change.
“The staff member responsible for the error is currently undertaking a retraining process,” she said.
SWANSTON ST, JAPANESE ROAD STRIKE ‘SISTER STREET’ DEAL
An embarrassed Lord Mayor Sally Capp tried to put the best spin on the stuff-up.
“Melbourne is an eclectic and quirky city and this change to our street signs is just another way we can showcase our creativity,” she said.
“So let’s embrace what was an accidental mistake and make it a city landmark. Personally, I can’t wait to take a selfie with the Swanstog St sign.”
The new name applies from today, April 1.
