The MFB said that the cause of the Hope St fire has been deemed suspicious and police are now investigating.

A 51-year-old man required treatment from paramedics.

It is believed that a smoke alarm alerted the man to the blaze.

Up to 26 firefighters fought the blaze that was quickly brought under control.

Victoria Police arson chemists will this morning investigate the fire.

MFB firefighter Rachel Cowling said smoke could be seen billowing from the windows of the unit which was already well alight when fire crews arrived.

The front of the unit suffered significant damage including to the front bedroom with the remainder of the unit also severely affected by fire and smoke.

Firefighters gave the 51-year-old occupant oxygen for smoke inhalation before paramedics continued treatment.

The occupants of the house have been relocated by police and power to nearby units remains disconnected.
