State opposition pushing for Jacinta Allan to front questioning into botched Games

There are calls for Jacinta Allan to front questioning into the axed Commonwealth Games with claims she misled parliament by revealing they had made “tremendous progress” with the event.

Victorian government grilled over Commonwealth Games cost blowouts

The state opposition will seek to haul Jacinta Allan back in front of the Public Accounts and Estimates Committee, claiming she misled the parliament by boasting about the progress of the now-dumped Commonwealth Games.

It follows revelations the Premier – who at the time was the Minister responsible for delivering the Games – was told by her department on June 12 that budget decisions and scope were needed to secure the 12-day sporting extravaganza.

Despite that, one day later on June 13, Ms Allan fronted the parliament’s Public Accounts and Estimates Committee where she said the government was making “tremendous progress”.

The timeline was confirmed through a new document provided to a separate parliamentary inquiry which is examining the dumped event.

The opposition said this information raises questions about what Ms Allan knew during her evidence on June 13.

The document, from Department of Jobs secretary Tim Ada, said the submission to Ms Allan on June 12 “referenced the importance of a decision regarding budget and scope, to ensure the Games delivery schedule would not be compromised”.

“The department also verbally briefed the Minister during June as to the importance of a decision on budget and scope, so as to not jeopardise the delivering of the Games in March 2026,” the submission stated.

The opposition said Ms Allan must re-front the Public Accounts and Estimates Committee to correct her evidence.

Ms Allan on Thursday said she stood by all the evidence she provided at PAEC on June 13.

“I’ve really got nothing further to add,” she said.

“The information provided yesterday by the Department is entirely consistent with what we have said since we made that public announcement on the 18th of July.”
