A new company could take control of Melbourne’s iconic tram network as the state government begins planning a competitive tender process to continue operating the network.

The state government announced that in 2024, a new long-term service contract will be awarded to the best suitor, searching “around the world for those best qualified” to take the reins.

A state government statement said the new-look contract, currently held by Yarra Trams, would improve the travel experience for everyone in Melbourne.

“The tram operations and maintenance will be under a newly designed contract, one that continues to modernise the experience for our passengers and delivers improvements at every stage of the journey,” it read.

“The Government has invested significantly in new trams and supporting infrastructure, and this next contract will ensure that these are delivered to benefit passengers.”

The famous tram network, consisting of more than 510 trams, eight depots, 1600 tram stops and 250km of double track has operated for over 100 years, cementing itself as the largest in the world.

Yarra Trams, who are operated by Keolis Downer Victoria and have held the contract for 14 years, said they are looking to retain it next year.

“We’re incredibly proud to be the operator of Yarra Trams and welcome this opportunity to put forward a competitive bid that expands on the extraordinary work we’ve delivered in partnership with the Victorian Government over the last 14 years,” acting chief executive of Keolis Downer Victoria Adele McCarthy said.

“From running trams reliably and punctually and increasing accessibility, to investing in the environmental and social sustainability of our operations, to dramatically reducing safety incidents, I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished so far.

“We remain committed to providing a world-class service for our passengers and the Victorian communities we serve now, and into the future.”
