The owner of a cafe visited by Opposition Leader Matthew Guy this morning has been convicted of cultivating illicit drugs.
Mr Guy kicked off the last week of the state election campaign by visiting Frankston’s Beach 162, where he met with Mariam Jamil, who talked about how she was struggling under the weight of rising power bills.
She was greeted warmly by Mr Guy and his Frankston candidate Michael Lamb, a former drug cop in the area.

But in an embarrassing gaffe, the Herald Sun can reveal Ms Jamil was convicted in 2015 over growing cannabis.
The conviction was exposed when her business sought a liquor licence for Beach 162 from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation several months later.
A copy of the commission’s decision, obtained by the Herald Sun, shows the licence was granted on the condition that Ms Jamil “not participate in the management or control of the subject premises”.
Victoria Police had also asked the commission to ban her from being at the cafe completely, although that was not accepted in the final decision.
Ms Jamil spoke this morning about how she ran the business with her daughter.
Under the terms of the licence, the management and control of the business must be handled by Ms Jamil’s daughter.
“If there was any issue I was standing next to the local senior sergeant (Michael Lamb),” Mr Guy said.
“I don’t know her details. I’ve got no idea of someone’s liquor licence application.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t search the liquor licence database every night.”
Asked if Mr Lamb should have been aware of her conviction, Mr Guy said: “You are asking something that I’m not privy to that information.”
