Matthew Guy promises commute time cut with Dingley traffic light blitz

MATTHEW Guy has delivered his latest promise to Melburnians in marginal seats in the south eastern suburbs and sandbelt, promising to remove all traffic lights on the Dingley Bypass.

MATTHEW Guy has delivered his latest promise to Melburnians in marginal seats in the south eastern suburbs and sandbelt, promising to spend $600m to remove all traffic lights on the Dingley Bypass to create a Dingley Freeway.

The Opposition Leader made the announcement at an intersection in Moorabbin, saying the project would save motorist up to 15 minutes on their one-way commute in peak hour.

The Coalition is promising to remove six traffic light intersections and upgrade Westall Road and Spring Road, having already announced the removal of an intersection at the corner of South and Warrigal Roads.

“We’ve got to invest in road infrastructure and actually get traffic moving in Melbourne again,” Mr Guy said.

“The Liberals and Nationals have a plan to get Melbourne moving again, to get back in control of congestion in what is now in many parts of Melbourne the slowest commute time in Australia.”

The project will allow motorists to travel between South Road and Springvale Road without stopping at traffic lights.

Mr Guy said there had been a 26.8 per cent increase in weekday traffic on parts of the Dingley Bypass in the last two years, as Melbourne’s population booms.

While the announcement was made in the seat of Bentleigh, held by Labor with a 0.8 per cent margin, the road connects to the sand belt seats of Mordialloc and Frankston, won by the Liberals in 2010 and lost to Labor, which now holds them by 2.1 per cent and 0.7 per cent respectively, in 2014.
