REPEAT child rapists would face mandatory jail terms of at least ten years under an expansion of the Coalition’s plan to lock in longer sentences for violent offenders.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy announced this morning that three more offences would attract mandatory minimum jail terms if the Coalition wins this month’s state election.

It means 17 violent offences would be covered by mandatory terms.

The three new offences added to the list today involve the sexual penetration of a child.

The Coalition would set a 15-year minimum term for a repeat offender convicted of an incident where the victim is aged under 12, while there would be 10-year minimum if the victim is aged from 12 to 16.

Mr Guy said the justice system was broken and the Coalition offered “a tough plan to fix it”.

“Under a government I lead, jail will mean jail. A minimum of 10 or 15 years will mean exactly that,” he said.
