No fines have been issued to partygoers or hosts of an impromptu street party in St Kilda’s Acland Street, but investigations into Saturday night’s festivities are continuing.

About 100 people were dancing in the street, not wearing masks or social distancing, before police broke up the event at 11pm.

According to their Facebook page, the event was hosted by Melbourne Interactive Entertainment, with revellers partying alongside a DJ set up near the Barkly St end of the Acland Street mall.

Event manager David Kirsner said he had not received a fine on Saturday night.

“I haven’t worked since March,” Mr Kirsner said.

“The way I understood it is that it’s supposed to be just … a loving sort of come together where people were going to be doing the right thing as much as possible.

“I think at the end it got a little bit out of hand, it was mainly just one or two people that caused that.”

A spokeswoman for Victoria Police said police moved a number of people on and spoke to the DJ.

“A number of people were warned in relation to social distancing and CHO directions,” she said.

“Police are also looking into the DJ set up of music on the street and investigating whether or not any offences have been committed.”

No one was arrested when police broke up the party. A few people in the crowd booed, but partygoers moved on peacefully.

The Herald Sun did not witness any fines being issued.

Under Victoria’s current COVID-19 restrictions, outdoor gathering in a public place are limited to up to 10 people, and masks remain mandatory.
