A student from St Kevins College has been rushed to hospital after a balcony accident on Friday morning.

It’s understood that a number of students were playing on the middle school deck and a year eight student fell when the balcony surface gave way.

The student is believed to have been jumping on a wooden bench before the bench fell through the deck about ten metres to the undercroft below.

The incident occurred at the year seven to 12 Heyington campus in Toorak on Moonga Rd.

A school spokesperson said the year seven student was receiving “excellent care from the medical team at the Royal Children’s Hospital”.

“In speaking with Mum and Dad, he has sustained fractures that include the wrist, leg and collarbone,” the school said.

“He is responsive and in a stable condition.”

The school said that an ambulance and the boy’s parents were called immediately at the time of the incident.

“We are mindful that some staff and students witnessed the event and we will continue supporting them,” the school said.

“We are aware that incidents such as these can impact people differently.

“With this in mind, EAP counsellors will be on site this afternoon to support any staff who wish to access that service from 1.30pm to 3.30pm in the Chapel. As always, there will be EAP support after hours and over the weekend.

“I wish to acknowledge the swift and professional action of all staff involved in a challenging situation.”

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said paramedics were called to the incident about 11:20am.

The teenage boy was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a “serious but stable condition” and had sustained upper and lower body injuries.

A WorkSafe spokeswoman confirmed they were investigating the incident.

“WorkSafe has been notified and inspectors and investigators are responding,” she said.
