AN apartment block is set to be built on part of the Boyd Community Hub site in Southbank, delivering the city council a $15.5 million windfall.

Council officers are recommending the sale of the land off Kavanagh St, next to the community centre.

The proposed deal is for Cairo Melbourne to buy the quarter-hectare site to build 200 apartments with 46 of those for affording housing.

The Southbank Residents Association argued against the sale, raising concerns about overdevelopment.

President Tony Penna said Southbank needed more public space.

“Here was an opportunity to turn it into a public park and instead they’re giving approval to build another high-rise in Southbank,’’ Mr Penna said.

Money from the sale would go towards the Queen Victoria Market redevelopment, not Southbank, he said.

Councillors will vote on the proposal on Tuesday.
