A friend of a man hit by a truck in Southbank last Thursday says he is in shock over the “horrific” crash, as his friend fights for life.
Gene Zimmermann said it was unknown when his friend Alex Belyi would be back on his feet and on Sunday night remained in intensive care.
Alex was one of five people aged in their 20-30s taken to hospital after a B-double truck allegedly hit them at the intersection of Power Street and City Road.
“I still can’t believe it to be honest. I’m shocked,” Mr Zimmermann told Seven News. “He’s basically pretty much fighting for life right now. I’m not too certain how long he will actually take for him to be even get back on his feet.”
Mr Zimmermann said Alex, 28, was undertaking a delivery when struck.
He said surgeons had removed half his stomach in hospital as his pelvis was crushed, his arm broken and his bladder damaged. The full extent of injuries won’t be known until he wakes up, Seven News reported.
Mr Zimmermann has set up a GoFundMe to help with Alex’s recovery and rehabilitation, as well as medical and rent bills.
The truck driver, Frank Rogers, 64, was bailed on Saturday.
He faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court charged with two counts of driving in a dangerous manner causing serious injury over the City Road collision, about 7pm on Thursday. The court heard Rogers told police he “felt a bump” when he turned into Power Street, allegedly sweeping up four pedestrians, a food delivery cyclist and a traffic light.
