A WEALTHY South Yarra resident has been stabbed by a man who had been sleeping on his back porch last week.

A WEALTHY South Yarra resident has been stabbed by a man who had been sleeping on his back porch.

Stonnington CIU detectives have said the 56-year-old man opened his back door to go to his garage to move his car when he disturbed the man at about 7.10am last Friday (March 18).

The man stabbed the victim a number of times, including in the heart, before running away from the William Street property.

The victim is still recovering in hospital from serious injuries sustained in the attack.

Detectives have released a digital image of the man they are hunting.

He is caucasian, aged in his early to mid 30s, about 182cm tall, with a thin build, long brown scraggly shoulder-length hair and was unshaven.

He was wearing jeans or cargo pants, a long sleeve jumper and light-coloured shoes.

Investigators will set up an information caravan in William Street, at Lovers Lane, between 6.20am and 8am tomorrow.
