MOTORISTS headed to the Royal Melbourne Show are facing delays after a truck brought down tram lines in Flemington this morning.

VicRoads said drivers should avoid the area during the afternoon peak, and they don’t know when the road will reopen.

The traffic delays started after the truck hit a rail bridge, bringing down tram lines on Racecourse Rd about 9.30am.

Route 57 trams were diverted in both directions as a result, with buses operating between stops 20 and 37 along the route.

VicRoads spokesman Brad Arnoldt said the incident happened between Boundary Rd and the CityLink on ramp.

He said westbound traffic on Racecourse Rd had been reduced to one lane and the traffic was “terrible”.

Drivers were being told to seek alternative routes to get to Melbourne Showgrounds.
