AXING the tampon tax has been backed by state Labor leaders as the federal Opposition steps up its campaign to stop slugging women $30 million in GST a year for sanitary products.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has joined Queensland’s Annastacia Palaszczuk, Western Australia’s Mark McGowan and other state Labor executives in throwing their support behind Bill Shorten’s proposal to remove GST on sanitary products.

They have signed a letter saying: “We are united in agreement that these should be considered essential health products — and the tax system should recognise them as such. We call on the government to act on this issue immediately.”

The letter comes amid increasing public pressure to exempt sanitary products from the GST, however the Federal Government has tried to avoid discussing the issue.

Last week, Treasurer Scott Morrison said “that is a matter for the states and territories” when asked why his government would not change the tax arrangement.

Mr Shorten said “there’s no excuses left” for the Liberal government to not get rid of the tax in Tuesday’s Budget.
