A shopper has expressed her horror at seeing an “absolutely disgusting” tray of browning meat for sale at a Woolies store in Melbourne’s outer east, with the supermarket giant admitting it shouldn’t have been on the shelves.
Michelle Baker shared a photo of a packet of beef stir-fry reduced from $18 down to $11.06 which she spotted at the store on Wednesday night.
“I know there is short supply on the shelves but OMG Woolworths Chirnside Park this is absolutely disgusting. Whoever marked it down instead of binning it should be sacked,” she posted online this week.
The post attracted dozens of comments, with many seeing the humour of the situation.
“Half cooked – less work for when you get home,” one person said, while another commented: “$11 for beef AND free diarrhoea, in this economy? Bargain!”
But others believed there was nothing wrong with the beef.
“It’s because the bloods come out of the meat I’m sure if you cooked it up for a homeless person that would appreciate it or someone who’s down their luck with children”, while another said: “Beef goes brown when it’s exposed to oxygen. The only reason meat isn’t normally brown is because they treat it with a gas. This is probably perfectly fine.”
It comes as many Woolworths stores have been plagued with empty shelves since the start of industrial action at four distribution centres last month.
“Let’s hope this strike gets Woolworths to pull their head in. Guess they are not the fresh food people anymore,” one person said, while another commented: “Support your local butcher most supermarkets meat is rubbish.”
A Woolworths spokesperson said: “We take food safety very seriously and this product should not have been on the shelf. As soon as this was brought to the attention of the team at this store, this packet was removed.”
