A MELBOURNE shopper has discovered a maggot in another Aldi product, raising questions over the operation of the low-cost supermarket giant.
The discovery comes just four months after it was reported several Australian customers had found pieces of metal, maggots and even fingernails in products bought at the German-owned stores.
Theone Cheong, 65, of Brighton, returned to complain at the new Aldi store in Cheltenham on Sunday night armed with a jar of red cabbage and apple pieces — with a live maggot still wriggling at the top.
“I had eight girlfriends over for lunch at my house and I was mortified when I opened this jar for the first time at the table to see this creature moving inside,” she told the Herald Sun.
“One of my friends said ‘What is that?’, and I said ‘Good god, it’s a maggot and it’s alive’.”
Mrs Cheong, who had bought the jar on Saturday, said it was the second time she had found maggots in products from the store.
“The first time was a few months ago when I opened a box of eggs to discover that it was crawling with maggots inside two eggs that were broken.
“I thought it was a one-off but this is the last straw. I won’t be shopping here again.”
The red cabbage was made by Dutch company Hak.
In March it was reported customers had found maggots and foreign objects in several Aldi products including a jar of tomato paste, ice cream and Mozart chocolate.
A spokesperson for Aldi told the Herald Sun the company had organised a shipment of the red cabbage product for testing.
“Following the report made at our Cheltenham store on Sunday afternoon, we can confirm this incident is an isolated case with no other reports made to our customer service department.”
