A PROPOSED twin-towers development on Melbourne’s CBD fringe would be home to Victoria’s first Shangri-La hotel, bringing a jobs and tourism boost to the city.

The Hong Kong-based chain confirmed it would occupy the 64-storey tower, planned for the corner of Latrobe and Exhibition streets and overlooking Exhibition Gardens. The $640 million development would also feature a matching residential apartment tower.

A deal was done with Malaysian developer SP Setia on Monday for Shangri-La to take 500 hotel rooms. SP Setia bought the site for $101 million.

Spokesman for applicant Urbis Jamie Govenlock said the development would provide 1000 ongoing jobs.

City councillors last night supported the application which will now go to the state government for final approval.

The twin towers would be linked at the 50th floor. About 2000sq m of office space and more than 1820sq m of retail would occupy the lower levels.
