Shane Warne fans pay tribute to late cricket legend with custom number plates

Victorian drivers have paid tribute to Shane Warne by snapping up custom number plates to honour the cricket star. See who else is inspiring motorists.

Shane Warne fans have rushed to get custom number plates for their cars in the tribute to the late cricket legend.

VicRoads has confirmed that several Warne-related plates have been supplied since the leg-spinner’s death in March at age 52.

Vehicles with the plates SHNWRN, SW. 23, WARN. 23, W4RNIE, SW4NIE and W4RNEY are now being driven on Victorian roads.

Two majestic cares are now carrying Queen Elizabeth plates – HRHQII and RIPQE. 2 – in honour of the long-serving monarch who died on September 8.

Tarneit was revealed as the suburb with the most custom plates – more than 1300 unique plates issued to residents last financial year.

Plates that were rejected because of their offensive nature or unsafe driving message include SNORER, IM5LOW, HEYCOP and GUNNR. 2.

ISHANK was rejected because of the crime reference, DRUNKK because of its drink-driving message and P5YC4O because it was an offensive mental health message.

About 20 custom plate applications are rejected every week.

And VicRoads said sometimes issued plates have had to be recalled.

Footy-themed plates are still popular with 22. PIES and 22. GEEL added before the end of the season.

Standard custom plates cost $495 through the vplates website, with styles such as fishing, car brands or footy themes available.

Slimline Euro-style versions are popular as are retro “Victoria – Garden State” white and green plates.

Roads and Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll said more than 50,000 sets of custom plates had been added in the past 12 months.

“Custom number plates are a great way for Victorian motorists to personalise their vehicles with a truly unique touch – no two sets of plates are the same,” Mr Carroll said.
