A sex shop has been heavily criticised for hanging an “overtly sexual” poster in its shop window, just metres from a St Kilda primary school.
Danish Blue Adult Centre was spiked by the Ad Standards panel for promoting a June sale poster that featured a cartoon hand gripping a phallic shape.
The text on the advertisement read: “Jerk off June” and “15 per cent off selected strokers”.
A local parent slammed the poster, claiming students at nearby St Kilda Park Primary School were exposed to the “graphic public obscenity”.
“These items are displayed opposite a primary school and children should not be exposed to these things,” they said.
“On a public street, parents like me are not able to protect our children from graphic sexual material.”
But the sex shop said the poster didn’t include real genitalia as it would be “100 per cent crossing the line” if they did.
“The poster was in our minds nothing over the top and it would be 100 per cent safe for display in a window front,” they said.
“The items for sale displayed in the window did not have any lifelike pictures or images on them pertaining to sexual orifices and were fine for public display.”
The sex shop said the students would not see the poster.
“The mentioned school is 230m across four lanes of traffic, two lanes of tram tracks, two bike lanes and the St Kilda bowling club and sports club,” they said.
“Children from the forementioned school do not have to walk across the store front as
there is street crossings/traffic lights on both sides of the store.
“Unless the parent is parked in the 15-minute parking out front of the store there is no need to cross in front of the store.”
“We feel that the signage was not graphic sexual material at all, and this case should be dismissed.”
The panel found the poster breached advertising code of ethics, labelling it “overtly sexual”.
“The panel considered that young children would be unlikely to walk past the store on their own, however would be likely to walk along the commercial street in the company of adults,” they said.
The sex shop said: “As this was a sale for June, the advertisement has been down for 25 days now”.
St Kilda Park Primary School was contacted for comment.
