Senior Liberals have raised concerns about the notice of Friday’s vote

A move to expel rebel Liberal MP Moira Deeming may not go ahead on Friday because of concerns party rules were breached in arranging the special meeting.

A vote to expel rebel Liberal MP Moira Deeming could be delayed amid concerns the party has failed to give appropriate notice.

Under Liberal Party rules, a notice to expel a member must “specify the reasons for such proposed expulsion” and be signed by the leader, deputy leader, or five MPs.

Notice of Friday’s vote was sent to MPs on Saturday, but was not signed.

A group of senior Liberals have raised concerns about the notice, and have also questioned whether it has adequately specified reasons for the move.

They want a new notice circulated which would push the vote to expel Mrs Deeming into next week.

“The notice as we read it fails to comply with the constitution,” one senior Liberal said.

“It speaks to their haste in wanting to get rid of Moira.

“If the vote were to go ahead, it could later be rendered unconstitutional.”

A Liberal Party spokesperson said there was no plan to move Friday’s party room meeting.

Mrs Deeming has requested evidence supporting the second attempt to expel her.

Five MPs, including former leader Matthew Guy, have accused her of bringing the party into disrepute.

Sources backing the move are confident they have at least 22 votes of the 31 member party room, more than enough to pass the motion.

It would force Mrs Deeming, a Western Metropolitan Region upper house MP, permanently onto the crossbench.

She is currently serving a 9-month suspension after successfully striking a deal to avoid an earlier vote to expel her.
