A kayaker feared missing at Dargo has been found alive and well

Emergency crews have found a kayaker 24 hours after he was reported missing along the Mitchell River near Dargo.

Evacuation orders in place for Victoria floods

A missing kayaker has been found in the Mitchell River after an empty kayak floating downstream at Dargo sparked fears and a swift emergency response.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the man had not returned to his campsite after trying to retrieve his kayak from the river on Tuesday.

A search was conducted with assistance from SES, before the police Air Wing spotted the man and winched him to safety.

“The 47-year-old Churchill man did not sustain any injuries and was in good spirits after the rescue,” she said.

The kayaker’s disappearance came as several Gippsland rivers experienced minor flooding.

On Tuesday Victoria SES chief Tim Wiebusch said his crews had responded to 1750 calls for help since Sunday, with 52 of those for flood rescues.

“The good news is (that) we will start to see a number of those advice messages drop off this afternoon, as the flood watch area is contracted to where we are now seeing riverine flooding,” he said.

“A second peak is expected at Seymour throughout this evening, and that’s where we’re expecting it to reach 6.2m, yesterday the Goulburn River at Seymour reached 6.8m.

About 20 homes and businesses have so far been affected by floodwaters in Seymour and six residential properties have been flooded in Yea.

Mr Wiebusch said homes and businesses downstream of swollen rivers near Seymour and Shepparton could expect possible flooding on Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

“A Watch and Act is now in place for the Goulburn River all the way from Seymour through to Maroopna and Shepparton, where we’re expecting to see high and moderate flooding occurring overnight Wednesday and into Thursday,” he added.

“In and around the Kialla to Shepparton area, we could see up to 20 properties that may see above-floor flooding as a result of that moderate to high flooding on the Goulburn River.

“A further 150 properties could potentially see flooding in their streets and/or onto their properties.

“Now is the time to prepare … make sure you have up to three days’ supplies so that you can, if you need to, work through that period.”

Senior Meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology Michael Efron said Victoria’s north east would likely see a small amount of rain later this week but the rest of the state would see relatively “settled weather”.

“We’ve got really settled weather across the state, just the slight chance of some isolated thunderstorm activity over the far north east of the state,” he said.

“As we head into Wednesday and Thursday, we’re going to see those pretty settled conditions continuing and just the slight chance of some isolated showers and storms in the far east and northeast.

“As we head toward Friday and across the weekend, we’re likely to see that shower and storm activity become a little bit more extensive over eastern and north eastern districts.

“We could see some heavier rainfall, but certainly not as much, not as extensive as what we have seen over the last few days … so good news on the weather front over the next few days.”
