Seal makes splash in Yarra River

A seal has made a splash in Melbourne’s Yarra River this morning, thrilling onlookers with the unusual sighting.

The sea mammal was captured on video near the Princes Bridge before 9am, with seagulls pictured flying in circles above the animal.

But one onlooker saw more than he bargained for, commenting: “Um. I just saw a seal kill a seagull in the Yarra river.”

It’s not the first time the cheeky mammals have been spotted in the Yarra, with another sighting reported near the Hoddle Bridge on a hot November morning last year.

At the time, a Parks Victoria spokesman said it was not rare to see them in the CBD river.

“Australian fur seals are more regularly being seen venturing up as far as the Bridge Rd Bridge, and it’s an encouraging sign of the health of the Yarra,” waterways district manager Michael Treanor said.

Other unusual Yarra River sightings include two bottlenose dolphins that were spotted near the Church St Bridge last September.
