Sailing hero Jessica Watson has announced the sad and sudden death of her longtime partner, Cameron Dale.
Watson wrote a heartbreaking tribute to Dale, aged 29, who passed away on Monday nearly six weeks after suffering a serious stroke.
Watson, who sailed into the history books as a teenager when she became the youngest person to sail around the world non-stop and unassisted, posted about her ‘indescribable grief’ after the devastating loss.
“On Monday, 30 August 2021 we lost our Cam — my long-term partner in every aspect of life and planned future,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Cam passed away peacefully nearly six weeks after a catastrophic stroke. We’ll be forever grateful for the dedicated care he received at the Gold Coast University Hospital.
“Cam and I have been inseparable since 2011, our shared world centred on messing about on boats. Describing what Cam means to me is impossible — everyone who knows us understands how much we simply loved each other.”
She continued: “Even while experiencing indescribable grief, I feel so grateful for the family, friends, and communities Cam has given me and the person I’ve become with him.
“I take enormous strength from having been so devotedly loved. The years of treasured memories offer enormous comfort.”
She concluded: “Being Cam’s ‘Jess’ is the role I’m most proud of. Cameron Dale 21.12.1991 – 30.08.2021”.
Watson spent 210 days at sea at the age of 16 in her small boat Ella’s Pink Lady, often encountering 70-knot gusts and 10-metre swells.
She penned a best selling book called True Spirit, was named Young Australian of the Year, and received Order of Australia honours.
Last year she spoke to the Herald Sun about working in the human capital team at accounting firm Deloitte in Melbourne. She had also got her MBA degree.
It was announced in May this year that True Spirit, the long-awaited screen adaptation of Watson’s record-breaking solo circumnavigation of the world, will be produced by Netflix on the Gold Coast and various locations throughout South East Queensland and Sydney.
Starring Australian Teagan Croft (Titans, The Osiris Child) as Watson, the film currently shooting in Queensland, follows her amazing journey, setting sail from Sydney on October 18, 2009 on the historic sailing odyssey.
Watson posted her excitement in July about meeting the new “me” when she met with Croft and filmmaker Sarah Spillane.
