Strikes could hit Melbourne’s train and tram network at the same time after the state’s public transport union declared it would also seek industrial action with Yarra Trams.
In a memo to members over the weekend, the Rail, Tram and Bus Union’s (RTBU) tram division announced it would apply for protection action with the Fair Work Commission on Monday night.
“We have not taken this decision lightly,” the letter reads.
“We have been bargaining in good faith with Yarra Trams since March.
“Unfortunately, due to their uncompromising and heavy-handed tactics we have been forced into making this application.”
The union also claim that KDR Victoria, who own the operator, has doubled its profits in the last year.
The Herald Sun understands the application has now been lodged.
Yarra Trams put forward an agreement to staff but this was overwhelmingly rejected by 97 per cent of those who voted.
It comes just two weeks after the RTBU sought permission for stoppages up to 48 hours and other industrial action including refusing to take tickets.

Because the applications have been made so close to each other it is possible staff could stop work on trains and trams at the same time.
If successful, strike action could hit the network by the end of the month.
“We will continue to work towards achieving a positive outcome for our staff and passengers,” a Yarra Trams spokesman said.
Both train and tram workers have been pushing for a pay increase of 6 per cent pear year.
A government spokeswoman said:
“This is a matter for the parties, who we urge to negotiate in good faith.”
