WHEN it comes to second chances, one dog is miles ahead of the pack.
RSPCA Victoria says the staffordshire terrier has again proven the most popular breed adopted from its animal shelters, with 357 — more than 15 per cent of all adopted dogs and puppies — finding a forever home in 2017.
RSPCA Victoria chief executive Dr Liz Walker said the breed’s popularity was no surprise.
“The staffy is a loyal, trustworthy dog renowned for its love of people,” Dr Walker said.

The kelpie — the classic Australian sidekick — came in second most popular among Victorians, with 233 adopted.
While it was widely regarded as a “working dog”, kelpies were just as content in a family home as on a farm, Dr Walker said.
The Jack Russell, greyhound and maltese rounded out the top five, with 2325 canines rehomed last year.
In December, the Victorian parliament outlawed puppy farms as part of an animal welfare crackdown.

STRICT LAWS SEE RENTERS DUMP PETS
The industry shake-up will see pet shops able to sell only from approved sources, such as shelters, pounds or registered foster carers.
Pet shops will also be banned from displaying puppies in windows.
Dr Walker urged Victorians looking for a “four-legged companion” to consider adoption.
“As our adoption data shows, we have a range of breeds looking for a new, forever home,” she said.
“Dogs are loyal and loving four-legged companions that have so much to offer. There’s a reason why they are referred to as man’s best friend.”
