More reports and video of mice in patients’ rooms at major Melbourne hospitals have emerged, following revelations of rodents and roaches at The Alfred and Sandringham.
A former patient of Royal Melbourne Hospital filmed a mouse scurrying through her room in May last year while staying in the gastroenterology ward, adding there were also mice droppings under her bed.
“When I mentioned the issue of mice running around and across my bed and belongings, I was told ‘oh, we’ve been trying to catch it for a while — just ignore it’,” she said.
The patient also claimed she dealt with hygiene issues at The Alfred, when she was forced to walk through urine on her bathroom floor for three days in order to shower or use the toilet.
“I asked many times to get it cleaned,” she said.
“Our hospitals need some major work done to be safe for the patients.”
A Royal Melbourne Hospital spokesperson said it had robust pest control measures in place.
“We are aware pest activity can increase during periods of construction and redevelopment, and many buildings close to these works, such as the RMH, have been affected,” the spokesperson said.
“Patient safety remains a priority for us and we are continuing to work with our pest control company to manage the issue.”
It follows reports that Victoria’s major trauma hospital The Alfred is plagued by mice, with faeces found on beds and rodents seen running around patient rooms and even supposedly sterile operating theatres.
Internal logs have revealed the run down hospital has had a major pest problem and staff and patients have reported mice and rats in patients’ personal belongings, surgeries, staffrooms and communal areas.
Pest problems have also been reported at the Alfred Health run Sandringham and Caulfield hospitals, where bugs, foxes, and cockroaches have been seen.
