Robert Doyle allegations: Top lawyer says probe putting key people under ‘considerable stress’

THE top barrister investigating sexual harassment allegations against Lord Mayor Robert Doyle has revealed that key players are under “considerable stress”.

Investigation into Melbourne Lord Mayor begins

AN investigation into claims that Lord Mayor Robert Doyle sexually harassed women has put key players under “considerable stress”, the top lawyer conducting the inquiry has revealed.

It comes as other sources have told the Herald Sun several more women have come forward to give evidence to the City of Melbourne inquiry led by Ian Freckelton, QC.

Dr Freckelton, who was appointed by city council CEO Ben Rimmer just last weekend, said that many interviews had already been conducted.

“We are endeavouring to conclude it as quickly as possible because of the sensitivities of it, and in order to make sure that the council can continue to run effectively,” he told the Herald Sun.

“It’s important that it all be fairly undertaken, and also in particular so that the Lord Mayor has an opportunity to respond to any concerns that have been raised.

“And he’ll be given that opportunity early in the new year.”

The inquiry was triggered after councillor and Team Doyle member Tessa Sullivan dramatically resigned last Friday, and provided a 24-page dossier detailing allegations against Cr Doyle.

These included that he touched her breast in the mayoral car and made a lewd comment to her in a Town Hall lift.

Also included in Ms Sullivan’s dossier is an allegation by another councillor of inappropriate behaviour by the Lord Mayor during a dinner at CBD Italian restaurant Lupino in December 2014.

It can be revealed the dinner was part of a recruitment process to appoint a new CEO.

The Lord Mayor, who has taken a month’s leave while the investigation occurs, has described Ms Sullivan’s allegations as abhorrent and said he would fight to clear his name.

Sources have indicated that other women have come forward with allegations, although the Herald Sun is unable to verify the nature of those claims.

However, it is understood that an allegation before the inquiry involves an alleged incident with council staff during the Spring Carnival races.

A source close to Cr Doyle has cast doubt on the possibility of improper behaviour during his limited attendance at the races.

Asked if anyone had come forward with claims not related to Ms Sullivan’s dossier, Dr Freckelton said: “A number of people have made contact to supply information.”

Asked how many interviews would be conducted in total, Dr Freckelton said: “Its evolving. There’s not a fixed number, we are speaking to anyone who has relevant information to provide”

He expected to report to the council in January.
