Road work disruptions: Where to avoid Melbourne traffic snarls

ROAD and lane closures may cause peak-hour traffic chaos across Melbourne on Thursday. Here is VicRoads’ list of day-time disruptions and alerts to help you avoid delays.

NICHOLSON ST, FITZROY

Full closure

Where: Nicholson St, Fitzroy is closed between Victoria and Alexandra parades for two weeks for tram works.

When: Works to finish 5am Sunday, September 16. Buses are replacing No.86 and No.96 trams around the closure.

Detour: Use Rathdowne, Brunswick, Lygon or Smith streets northbound/southbound but expect delays. Plan your trip.

WARRANDYTE BRIDGE

Expect delays of up to 15 minutes

What: One lane will be closed on Kangaroo Ground-Warrandyte Rd as part of the Warrandyte Bridge upgrade project. Delays of up to 15 minutes are expected.

When: between 10am and 3pm daily until Friday, September 7.

FOGARTY AVE, YARRAVILLE

Road closed

What: Fogarty Ave will be closed in both directions between Cranbrook and Tenterdent streets, for West Gate Tunnel works.

Detour: Tenterden and Highgate streets.

SEAFORD RD/RAILWAY PDE, SEAFORD

Closure

Where: Seaford Rd is closed between Bayside Grove and Elsie Ave, and Railway Pde is closed between Seaford Rd and Johnstone St.

When: Closed until Friday, September 28. There will be no pedestrian access over the level crossing during this time, however, VicRoads will provide a shuttle bus for those needing assistance over the level crossing, including accessible needs.

BEACH RD, BRIGHTON

Lane closures

Where: Two lanes closed southbound at times on Beach Rd between North Rd and Bay St.

When: Closures in place until mid-September.

Detour: Nepean Highway is a good alternative.

LONG-TERM CLOSURES

WHITEHALL ST, YARRAVILLE

Road closure

Where: Whitehall St is closed northbound between Leek St and Somerville Rd.

When: Closure in place for about 12 months as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project.

Detour: Leek St, Hyde St and Somerville Rd.

MAROONDAH HIGHWAY/DORSET RD, CROYDON

Slip lane works

Where: The left turn slip lane is closed from the Maroondah Highway onto Dorset Rd for upgrade works.

When: These works will continue until February, 2019. A left turn is still allowed from the left lane of the Maroondah Highway onto Dorset Rd.

CHILDERS ST, KENSINGTON

Long-term road closure

Where: Childers St is closed in Kensington between the Bill Vanina Pavilion and Ormond St.

When: This closure is expected to remain in place until 2022.

Detour: A detour is in place.

BUCKLEY ST, ESSENDON

Full closure

Where: Buckley St remains closed both directions between Mount Alexander Rd and Cliff St for level crossing removal works.

When: Closure will be in place until 6am Sunday, September 30.

Detour: Waverley St, Maribyrnong Rd, Mount Alexander Rd.

SOUTHBANK BOULEVARD, MELBOURNE

Road closure

Where: Southbank Boulevard is closed to traffic in both directions between St Kilda Rd and Sturt St.

When: Closed for the next 18 months. Trams will continue to operate and the precinct will remain open to pedestrians.
