CELEBRITIES and their young children were blindsided by a bizarre burlesque act at Luna Park’s star-studded 103rd birthday event.

The provocative show, featuring an entertainer popping balloons with strategically placed spikes on her bikini, sparked bamboozled looks from the crowd, which included Hollywood star Rachel Griffiths and singing royalty Tina Arena, who attended the event with their kids.

But Luna Park management said they were as stunned as their guests when the raunchy routine unravelled at the iconic St Kilda fun park last night.

Luna Park co-owners Lindsay Fox and Bill Kelty looked visibly uncomfortable as inhibitions dropped and balloons popped.

An upset Luna Park CEO Mary Stuart told Confidential: “It’s not quite what we were expecting. We were expecting a balloon (themed performance) that went with the birthday party cake.

“It was not appropriate for the circumstances. If you’re a family park, if you’ve got children, there are a whole range of things that are appropriate and a list of things that are not. If it was an adult only event, sure, it might have been fine. But it wasn’t appropriate.”

The invite-only party included celebrities like broadcaster Jules Lund, singer Clare Bowditch and reality show builders Darren and Dea Jolly, all with children in tow.

A flustered music industry executive told Confidential: “My kids will never look at balloons the same way again.”

Ms Stuart said the incident was “a moment in an evening. But (Fox and Kelty) didn’t think it was appropriate, and I didn’t think it was appropriate.”

She added: “We try very hard to provide an environment for families and kids that is fun, and safe, and secure.”
