Ricky Brockdorff jailed over Docklands shooting, Point Cook siege

A man who shot his girlfriend while ‘paranoid’ from drugs, before holding an innocent family captive during a Point Cook siege has been jailed for more than eight years.

Alleged fugitive arrested after 10 days on the run

A man has been jailed after he blasted his girlfriend with a shotgun, sparking a 10-day manhunt and ending in a dramatic siege.

Ricky Brockdorff was paranoid after using meth and cannabis when he shot his girlfriend with a shotgun from close range outside a Docklands apartment complex following an argument.

He went on the run for more than a week before he was arrested following an hours-long siege at a Point Cook home that had children inside.

The County Court on Tuesday heard the then 32-year-old and his girlfriend, 25, were arguing at a party before he shot her in the stomach with a sawn-off shotgun outside an apartment building on Rakaia Way just after midnight on July 17, 2021.

He helped his injured girlfriend to the foyer before calling security and fleeing.

Days later, he stole a motorbike before later making his way to a female associate’s home in Point Cook.

But the woman, whose two children were at home, asked Brockdorff to leave after she saw a news report that he was on the run, prompting him to pull out a gun and threaten to kill her.

Heavily armed police soon arrived and Brockdorff holed up for three hours before the woman and her children were able to escape.

Special Operations Group officers wearing ballistic vests and carrying guns continued negotiations with Brockdorff for two hours before he gave himself up.

A shotgun was later found inside the home.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Sandra Davis said Brockdorff’s girlfriend, who spent nearly two weeks in hospital and underwent five surgeries, suffered post-traumatic stress disorder, flashbacks and depression as a result of the shooting.

Brockdorff initially claimed she had grabbed the barrel of the gun causing it to discharge but later admitted he had shot her.

The judge accepted Brockdorff was in a drug-induced psychosis at the time of the shooting and had shown remorse.

But she noted he had an extensive criminal history, including multiple jails stints for violence.

The court heard Brockdorff had a troubled childhood and began using drugs at a young age.

He was later diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and a low cognitive function.

Judge Davis jailed him for eight years and four months after he pleaded guilty to 11 charges including recklessly causing serious injury and numerous firearms offences.

Brockdorff, who has spent almost two years on remand, will be eligible for parole after serving five years and four months of his sentence.
