SUPERMARKET checkout workers are facing a torrent of abuse from customers frustrated by plastic bag bans, the retail union has warned.
With Coles and Woolworths set to ban plastic bags from all stores this month, the SDA has prepared a campaign to head off abusive behaviour.
The Don’t Bag Retail Staff campaign comes off the back of union research that found more than 85 per cent of retail and fast food workers had copped abuse from customers.

“We welcome this positive change for the environment and remind customers to bring their own reusable bag or simply purchase one,” the SDA’s Gerard Dwyer said. “While we understand some customers may be frustrated, there is no excuse for abusive or violent behaviour towards staff.
“Retail workers should not have to bear the brunt of any abusive behaviour, just for following the new rules. After all, no one deserves a serve simply for doing their job.”
Mr Dwyer said the union would remind retail staff about their rights, including not overloading bags at the customer’s request and not handling grubby bags.
