A GEELONG ice dealer looking to advertise his illicit trade was one of 86 motorists denied a customised numberplate by VicRoads last year.

Plates with provocative or inappropriate messages including ICEDLR, SLUTIN, DUMSHT and MYNOB were also deemed inappropriate.

Vplates.com.au, a VicRoads website on which motorists can request personalised plates, says they are rejected in “rare circumstances” — if they are offensive, contravene public decency, or send a negative message about road safety.

Unsuccessful applicants included a Hampton Park driver who wanted V1AL8R and a Beaconsfield Upper motorist who wanted BIGASS.

A Croydon driver who asked for 4. KORF and a like-minded Melton motorist who wanted 4. CORF both failed. And both SKROT and SCROT were deemed inappropriate.

A Kew driver was denied ARYAAN as it was an “inappropriate racial reference”.

Drivers who wish to personalise their vehicles can pay up to $2000 for the custom-designed numberplates.

If inappropriate plates sneak through and are caught later, VicRoads asks that they are returned, and issues the motorist a refund.

Six per cent of unsuccessful applicants were willing to risk the ire of police, asking for plates including P1GGEY, PIGZ and COP8TR.

The outer Melbourne suburb of Caroline Springs logged the most rejected plates.

Applications from that suburb included B84PIGS and W34PN.

Twenty per cent of rejected numberplates were from regional drivers.

Most of the proposed numberplates were rejected for inappropriate language.

These included FORCUE, HORBAG and RLMFAO.

Others were considered to promote a bad road safety message or referred to the use of a car as a weapon.

These included TWOFST and URACEN.

Other motorists’ numberplate creations were rejected over concerns that they could lead other motorists to the false conclusion that their vehicles were affiliated with a tow-truck company or with a government organisation.

Numberplates that contain references to terrorist organisations are also prohibited.
