A rail trench is likely to form the long-awaited replacement of the Glenroy Rd level crossing.
Acting Premier Lisa Neville and Acting Minister for Transport Infrastructure Melissa Horne made the announcement this morning, after the removal of the crossing was first flagged in 2013, and growing concern among Glenroy residents.
The crossing is considered one of the most congested in Melbourne, with about 19,000 vehicles using it each day.
Extensive technical investigations carried out since 2016 found lowering the rail line below Glenroy Rd would help avoid significant compulsory property acquisitions, resulting in plans to lower the rail.
Ms Neville said the removal would improve safety and save residents time.
“This dangerous and congested level crossing holds up thousands at Glenroy Rd each day — it’s got to go,” she said.
“This will make a real difference for people in Glenroy, making it quicker, easier and safer to get around.”
