CONTROVERSIAL US rapper Tyler the Creator is heading to Melbourne in September — but not if a women’s activist group has its way.

Collective Shout is petitioning Immigration Minister Peter Dutton to revoke the rapper’s visa, arguing his lyrics promote extreme violence towards women.

Tyler, 24, is due to arrive in Melbourne on September 6 as part of a national music tour that includes Brisbane and Sydney.

Last time he was in Australia, the police got involved.

“He sings about strangling and chopping up women who reject his sexual advances and raping their corpses,” Collective Shout writes in a letter to Mr Dutton.

“A characteristic feature of his songs is retribution against women who he perceives have wronged him.”

Prime Minister Tony Abbott told 3AW last Friday he had never heard of the rapper.

“I presume this guy is a foreigner of some sort?” he asked.

“My phase kind of ended with the Traveling Wilburys.”

Mr Abbott said any move to ban Tyler would depend on how outrageous his comments were.

“We do ban people from time to time on character grounds. I guess it would depend on what we

thought of his character,” he said.

Collective Shout says the Immigration Department failed to do a proper check of Tyler’s background before granting him entry the first time.

It claims Tyler verbally abused one of its campaigners at a Sydney performance in 2013, sparking a police investigation.

The group argues that allowing him into the country would also be at odds with the government’s agenda to tackle violence against women.

“Welcoming an artist like Tyler sends a message that our leaders don’t really care about stopping the promotion and glorification of violence against women,” it said in the letter.

However, fans have come to the rapper’s defence.

“He’s actually a good role model who promotes the breaking down of stereotypes, the following of dreams and being creative,” tweeted @ciamps.

“This campaign is like a witch hunt and if you deny someone the opportunity to come to this country based on lyrics of fiction, where do you draw the line?”

“His lyrics, especially his earlier ones, are not meant to be taken seriously, they are satirical and an expression of angst.”
