Protesters threaten chaos at vax hubs

Hundreds of self-proclaimed ‘freedom’ protesters have unveiled plans to ambush people waiting in line at vaccination centres — but police say they’re ready to pounce.

Wall of police tell anti-lockdown protesters to move on

Anti-vax protesters will on Saturday target major vaccination hubs with police on standby to ensure people can safely get the jab.

Victoria Police said protesters would face the full force of the law if caught breaching lockdown orders.

Hundreds of self-proclaimed ‘freedom’ protesters have threatened to cause widespread chaos at three of Melbourne’s major Covid vaccination hubs from 12pm on Saturday.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Rick Nugent said it was “extremely concerning” to hear about the potential protest activity.

“We will be there in force,” Mr Nugent said.

“People will be issued fines or arrested depending on the behaviour. All I ask is please don’t bother, don’t turn up, you’re going to be arrested and you put people at risk.

“Police will respond to all breaches of CHO directives, as we have been doing all the way.”

The ‘Free Victoria’ movement will descend upon three vaccination hubs to protest against lockdowns, vaccines and vaccine passports.

The venues include the Royal Exhibition Building, Sandown Racecourse and Melbourne Showgrounds.

“We will not comply,” the protest advert says.

“No more lockdowns. No coerced vaccines. No vaccine passports.”

The ringleaders have encouraged attendees to partake in “peaceful chanting” throughout their protest as well as bringing signs to advertise their cause.

The group also plans on ambushing those awaiting a vaccine in the queue with questions relating to the vaccine.

Victoria Police said they had a zero-tolerance policy to those deliberately flouting the law.

“Those who choose to blatantly disregard the CHOs directions and put the health and safety of all Victorians in jeopardy can expect to be held accountable and fined,” a police statement said.

“There will be a highly visible police presence in the Melbourne CBD, on the roads and across the public transport network tomorrow and over the coming week to support the community in complying with the CHOs directions.”

The group were dubbed the “tin foil hat brigade” during 2020 by Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius, who described them as “bats**t crazy”.

Last week police arrested 14 people following protest activity around Flagstaff Gardens while a total of 55 attendees were issued fines.

Two police officers were injured amid the violent scenes.

Alleged offences include assault police, affray and breaching CHO directions.

Anyone who is aware of a CHO breach is urged to call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
