Premier Jacinta Allan has come under fire for a low-key visit to regional Victoria for the first meeting of Victoria’s drought task force.

Ms Allan received a wet and wild welcome to Camperdown, in the state’s southwest, with firefighters blasting her cavalcade with water on arrival.

The Premier – who later said she was unaware of the protest – chaired the first meeting of the new Drought Response Taskforce which is considering emergency support for farmers.

Ms Allan has faced a worsening regional revolt in recent weeks amid her government’s new $2bn Emergency Services and Volunteer Fund which will disproportionately impact farmers.

Last week she paused the tax hike for one year giving temporary relief for all farmers and primary producers.

She also announced new grants of up to $5000 to support farm drought management improvements, in addition to financial counselling and mental health support.

It was dubbed a “slap in the face” by a coalition of regional mayors in the state’s north who said they had been abandoned by the government.

Member for Western Victoria Region, Bev McArthur, lashed the Premier’s Camperdown visit as a “massive missed opportunity”.

“Her hand-picked guest lists, public road closures and police escorts hid her from the anger real Victorians feel,” she said.

“If she had come and walked down the street, she would soon realise that what we need is not political theatre, but real help.

“The only thing regional Victoria wants to hear is a complete cancellation of the so-called Emergency Services Levy, not just a temporary one-year pause for select areas.”

Mrs McArthur accused the Premier and other government MPs of repeatedly refusing to meet with farmers.

“We do not need a travelling circus of 5 Labor MPs meeting as part of a task force that barely includes a farmer or firefighter,” she said.

“We need the immediate scrapping of the Labor Government’s cruel Emergency Services Tax and real action to support rural communities in crisis.

“Western Victoria is not a stage for political theatre. It is a region in desperate need of real help.

“There is much the Premier could do but start with listening to the local farmers, CFA volunteers and politicians who are on the ground in the affected areas.”

Asked if she realised country Victorians were angry with her government, Ms Allan said she knew there was more work to do.

“I understand keenly that there are many challenges that are being experienced in rural and regional Victoria right now,” she said.

“We’ll continue to work with farming communities. We’ll continue to listen to rural communities, but I say this very clearly, we’ll continue to act.

“We know there is more work to do, and we will do that work, and that work will be directly informed by a range of representatives and leaders from across rural and regional communities and organisations.”
