Police probing explosive vision of white powder and booze inside a Metro Tunnel office used by the CFMEU have made a surprise admission.

A police probe into vision of white powder and booze inside an office used by the CFMEU at the $13.7 billion Metro Tunnel has hit a dead end.

Explosive vision obtained by the Herald Sun in September showed the substance on a mirror next to open cans of beer and cider — banned from major projects sites for safety reasons.

The CFMEU later claimed it had been set up, but sources from the project said that would be a death wish and the union’s offices were always locked.

In a statement on Wednesday, police said they were aware of images showing white powder and alcohol in an apparent office setting.

“Police have investigated the matter and all avenues of inquiry have been exhausted,” the statement said.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

One project insider said many workers had believed the issue would be swept under the carpet due to the power and influence of the militant construction union on site.

The Metro Tunnel is set to open in 2025, and will connect South Yarra to Kensington via five new underground stations.

It is being built by a consortium called CYP, which includes Lendlease, John Holland, Bouygues Construction, John Laing and Capella Capital.

Major tunnelling wrapped up earlier this year with works now progressing on station fit-outs, while tracks will be laid next year to begin testing of trains from 2023.
