Police have identified one of the men accused of holding a racial sign on the steps of Parliament House on Friday.
It’s understood officers were called to reports that up to 20 protesters were holding a large anti-Semitic banner at Spring St about 6.55pm.
The men were dressed in black clothing and balaclavas.
A video posted to X showed the group walking down the stairs before heading south along Spring St.
In another clip, the neo-Nazis yelled “the Victorian government wants to take away our freedom of speech”.
The men then began chanting “freedom for the white man” before running towards Fitzroy Gardens and fleeing the scene.
Acting Superintendent Kelly Walker labelled their display as “disgusting”.
“They were outraged by what they could see on the sign, it wasn’t appropriate,” she said.
“They were disgusted and they were yelling at the protesters.
“As soon as the police arrived the men all ran off and dispersed into Fitzroy Gardens.
“The behaviour was disgusting.”
Sup Walker said one of the men was being sought by police and can expect to be charged.
“Police have been able to ID one of the men who was present, and they’ll be making all enquiries to apprehend him and look at the range of offences,” she said.
“Looking to ID those men is our priority.”
A Victoria Police spokesman said the investigation remained ongoing.
“Victoria Police vehemently condemns antisemitic or racially motivated behaviour in our society and will not tolerate this kind of activity,” he said.
